Saluki Way is not the thing that people want

We visited 15 males and 10 females, most of them are 15-25 years old. 20 people of our survey respondents are related with SIUC. 15 of them think building Saluki Way is unnecessary. Moreover, 5 people agree increasing tax for Saluki Way but all of our survey respondents think that the increase of 50% of sales tax for Saluki Way is over. And we also get an interesting date: females like football more than males (46%: 41%). This phenomenon maybe because girls think football players are cool, powerful, and muscular and also football game is absorbing. However, 19 people do not watch Saluki sport games often even though we have 13 people who like football. In addition, more than 50% of our survey respondents are think SIU should pay attention on education, not on football or commercials.

It is difficult for me to describe my feeling after this survey. I am happy because this survey can support my opinion; I am sad because I cannot understand why the meeting passes this legislation that increases sales tax to build Saluki Way. According to this survey, most people disagree with this legislation, and all of them are think that half percent increase in the sales tax is too much. So, I am suspicious of the reasons for making this legislation and passing this legislation. I do not know American political system a lot, but I thought legislator are supposed to protect the public and raise people’s life quality. In addition, I think SIUC should think about the real important thing that students and professors want. Maybe SIUC thinks making the school become famous can attract more people to travel in here and also can attract more students. However, it is a completely wrong. The purpose of school is to educate people, not to become a famous tourism place.

Saluki Way Project Receives $1 million Donation.

According to Eddington, A few weeks ago, one of wedded couple who live in carbondale annouced that they have decided to donate for Saluki Way at SIU arena.(2008)

In his article, Eddington says that "As Cook made the annoucement, he recalled the last SIU sporting event he attended with his father just three weeks before he passed away"(2008, para 2). He and his father are life long fan of Saluki and have lots of memorable moment with Saluki. SIU's Saluki Way project is one step closer to its goal because of their donation. Eddington says that SIU need much more money for Saluki Way.(2008) It's come not just from private contribution, but also the city of Carbondale and student fees. Construction is scheduled to begin this fall.

When I read this article, I was so surprised and interested in this issue because I want to study sport marketing in SIU. So I am very interested in this kind of issue. In my country's case, It's very unusual situation that somone gives his money for his community's university even if he likes watch sports game. In my opinion, I support using some taxes or student fees for Saluki Way because it is kind of marketing. I think main purpose of university is schooling. However, it requires lots of money for efficient schooling. Therefore the university performs some marketing strategy for advertising. I think the best way of marketing is make good image. I am sure that University sports team help make good image for university.

Half-percent increase to provide Saluki way fund

Half percent increase to provide Saluki way. In August 2007, Carbondale’s City Council meeting approved a new legislation for sales tax. This legislation will provide $2.3 million in additional income annually and including $1 million a year for Saluki Way for the next 20 years. The agreement group said that this city’s benefit from the existence of the university through a red-face and jabbing fingers. In other words, this city can become a famous tourism place is dependent on Saluki sport teams. On the other hand, the disagreement group said $20 million dollars over a 20-year time period was too much and too long of a commitment for the city to make.

In my opinion, I think this is not the correct way to make money for a state university. I have two points, one is maybe this town is developed SIUC but SIUC also get profits from this town. Carbondale provides a safe, convenient, and friendly environment for SIUC’s students and staff. The other is not every residents’ jobs are related to SIUC. For those people, this legislation is completely unfair. Some people say minority should follow majority but this legislation just statishies the business people and this school. The poor and weak residents just pay the money and could not get any benefit. When the rich people are enjoy the new, beautiful, and comfortable Saluki Way, the poor people are suffering.
